HINDSIGHT?
Does looking back and predicting the past make you a prophet?
For those of you that missed the startling, earth shattering, world changing news out the Cannes film festival last week, let me be the first to care less.  Once again, the entertainment world has provided an insight into the lack of depth and character that seems to plague the world of glitz and glamour when anything outside of fiction enters the picture.

Mikie Moore's latest film was reviewed by the Cannes Film Festival and awarded top honors.  Please, stop the applause, hold back the gasps of wonder, dab away the tears of joy that stream down your face.  Mikie Moore needs to be thanked by a grateful population for providing validation of the long questioned truth, 'IS HINDSIGHT REALLY 20/20?'  The world philosophers will stop wondering, the physics can get back to work on the theory of relativity, the Boy Scouts can once again 'Be Prepared' knowing the truth of the old adage.

Forgive me for trivializing something so TRIVIAL, but, duh!  The nice thing is that you don't have to see the film to get the general grasp of what the message is.  Mikie Moore's political position has long been known and every one of his films reflect this position.  Like every other Hollywood type that seems to have an endless supply of money and a podium to shout from, Mikie Moore can perform a service that is so desperately needed in the world, that of pointing out WHAT IS WRONG!  And yet, there don't seem to be any answers, potential solutions, or prescriptions for a better world.

A brief recap of the movie / documentary may provide some insight.  Mikie gathered hours and hours of old news clips and recordings and carefully selected the most precious, the same ones that your mother pulls out when your first date comes over, and by careful editing, presents a very accurate picture of the world and how the main character fails.  In this case, the main character is the President of the United States.  Mikie Moore takes a tragic event in the recent history and shows how everything and everyone involved were incapable of making the right choices.  WOW, what an accomplishment.  I'm sure the world didn't know that mistakes were made, people over reacted, policy shifts were extreme, and on and on.  What I don't understand is what makes this a form of entertainment?  Is he trying to cause the American people to think?  Does he want you to draw a conclusion?  Is he a liberal that has not held a real job his entire life?  Does Mikie Moore understand the average middle class worker and speaks to the issues that he faces each and every day?

This film starts at the beginning, which of course is at the polls in Florida where the American vocabulary was upgraded with the word 'Chad'.  Now for the real question.  Is this really the beginning?  What if Billary Clinton (I'm not a fan) had gone after Bin Laden after any of the bombings that occurred during that special 8 years in history?  What if Al Gore had won the election, would 9/11 not have happened?  How would Al Gore have reacted to the 9/11 tragedy?  This is all speculation, but isn't that the point.  Editing the past is, well, a waste (which is my opinion of Mikie Moore's work, but alas).  I have no problem with a film depicting the past as part of a solution.  Did Gandalf spend 11 hours bemoaning the fact that the kings of the past hadn't destroyed the ring when given the chance (reference from Lord of the Rings, a fictional movie)?  Did John Wayne bemoan the lack of experienced cowhands when the beef needed to get to market or did he gathered a courageous group of boys and turn them into men (reference from The Cowboys, a fictional movie)?  I have never considered something a contribution to society unless is suggests a solution and, in the case of a movie, plays out the future.

We, as a civilization, have a need to learn from the past, but only as a teaching tool to avoid the same mistakes in the future.  Mikie Moore takes the past and uses it to express a political perspective, and in the process, making a buck on his portrayal of the past.  Mikie Moore is like a spoiled child, ignore him and he'll go away.
